The recent events in the Middle East have prompted many companies to reassess the coverage their employees have when travelling to or staying in regions exposed to a risk of war or instability.
To help you navigate this, we’re providing a clear overview of how AG Employee Benefits & Health Care handles risks related to war, civil war, riots and civil unrest under the Disability and Death Benefit covers.
Our internal lists of countries at risk (FR - NL) - updated whenever necessary - specify whether war-risk coverage is possible for each destination and under which conditions. Countries are classified from 0 to 3.
1) My employee is already abroad and the country was added to the lists during their stay (e.g. Kuwait, Cyprus). Are they covered?
Disability
- Always covered if the disability is due to natural causes or an accident unrelated to an act of war.
- Personal travel: covered for war-related disability if the insured can prove they did not take an active part in the hostilities.
- Business travel: covered for war-related disability if the plan includes occupational accident coverage and the insured can prove they did not actively take part in the hostilities.
Death
- Always covered if the death is due to natural causes or unrelated to an act of war.
- Covered for war-related death if the insured can prove they did not actively take part in the hostilities.
2) My employee is already abroad in a country that was reclassified from List 3 to List 1 during their stay (e.g. Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia). Are they covered?
As these countries were already classified as war-risk destinations prior to departure, war-risk coverage can only be granted if AG was notified of the trip beforehand and the corresponding additional premium (e.g. List 3) was paid. If not, war risk is not covered for this stay.
Disability
- Always covered if the disability is due to natural causes or an accident unrelated to an act of war.
- Personal travel: covered for war-related disability if the insured can prove they did not actively take part in the hostilities.
- Business travel: war-related disability is covered if the plan includes occupational accident coverage, the insured can prove that they did not actively take part in the hostilities, and the employer requested war-risk coverage in line with the country’s classification at the time of departure.
Death
- Always covered if the death is due to natural causes or unrelated to an act of war.
- War-related death may be covered if the employer requested war-risk coverage based on the country’s classification at the time of departure and only if the insured can prove that they did not actively take part in the hostilities.
3) My employee is about to travel to a country on List 0, 1, 2 or 3. Are they covered?
Disability
- Always covered if the disability is due to natural causes or an accident unrelated to an act of war, regardless of the destination country.
- Personal travel: covered if the insured can prove they did not actively take part in the hostilities, even in countries on Lists 0 to 3. No additional premium required.
- Business travel:
- List 0 countries: war-related disability is never covered.
- Lists 1-3 countries: war-related disability is not covered by default. Coverage is only possible if:
- AG grants prior approval
- an additional premium is paid at least 5 business days prior to departure
- the plan includes occupational accident coverage
- the insured can prove they did not actively take part in the hostilities
However, there is a limit to the amount that can be insured with an additional premium:
- Maximum disability benefit: EUR 12,500 per year
Death
- Always covered if the death is due to natural causes or unrelated to an act of war.
- For war-related death, coverage depends on the country's classification (List 0-3), whether an additional premium was paid, and proof that the insured did not actively take part in the hostilities.
- List 0 countries: death is never insurable.
- List 1-3 countries, no additional premium: in the event of war-related death, only the theoretical surrender value is paid out.
- List 1-3 countries, with an additional premium: coverage for war-related death can be provided if the premium is paid prior to departure and there is proof that the insured did not actively take part in the hostilities.
However, there is a limit to the amount that can be insured with an additional premium:
- Maximum death benefit: EUR 250,000
