As an employer, you invest in your employees’ supplementary pension. But do they really understand the value of that benefit today? What people cannot see, they often struggle to appreciate. So how can you turn a distant pension promise into a tangible benefit that already matters today?

Ask your employees what their pension plan is worth

Ask an employee how much they earn each month and they will usually answer straight away. Ask how much supplementary pension their employer is building up, how much capital has accumulated so far or what it could be worth in the future, and you are far more likely to be met with silence.

This lack of understanding is substantial. Many employees do not have a clear picture of their state pension, their supplementary pension or how the two fit together. What is more, over 40% of Belgians do not know how much income they will need to maintain their standard of living in retirement.¹

That uncertainty stands in stark contrast to the scale of Belgium’s second pension pillar. On 1 January 2024, more than 4.1 million employees in Belgium were building up a supplementary pension. They were covered by pension plans set up by 63,010 employers.²

Valuable on paper, invisible in practice

Employees clearly value a supplementary pension, and 80% believe their employer should contribute to it.³ This makes the paradox all the more striking: employees expect their employer to help build their financial future, yet often have little idea what their employer is already doing for them today. As a result, one of the most valuable parts of the reward package remains under the radar.

For employers, that represents a missed opportunity. The investment is being made, but its full value is not always reflected in employee appreciation, engagement or perception of the benefits package.

More information does not automatically bring greater understanding

Pension information is certainly available. The problem is that it is often spread across different documents and points in time, written in technical language and difficult to relate to an employee’s personal situation. The answer is not to provide even more information. It is to make the information already available relevant, easy to understand and useful.

What is missing is not more data, but a clear link to the employee’s own reality.

The Transparency Act is a starting point, not the finish line

The Transparency Act requires employers and pension providers to communicate more clearly about pension rights and amounts. Each year, employees receive a pension overview showing the position of their supplementary pension at the end of the previous year. Find out what the Transparency Act changes in 2026 in this article.

Yet legal transparency alone does not make a pension feel tangible. A statement may contain accurate information without helping the reader understand what it means for them personally. Genuine transparency therefore requires communication that is personal, straightforward and available when employees need it.

The new generation expects simplicity, not a pension file

For younger generations, digital access is a given. They expect information to be instantly available, mobile, visual and intuitive. They want insight rather than documents, and look for answers in the digital environments they use every day.⁴

That does not mean they are uninterested in pensions. The threshold for engaging with complex information is simply too high. Employee benefits should therefore feel as easy to access as any other digital service.

Employee expectations are clear: the benefits you provide should be as easy to access as their favourite apps.

From an annual document to an always-on view

With MyAG Employee Benefits, pension information is no longer a once-a-year update. Employees can consult it themselves whenever it becomes relevant to them. More than 1.1 million employees use the app to check their pension reserves, run gross and net simulations and find their documents.

Starting end of 2026, employees building up a supplementary pension with AG will be able to find their annual pension overview in MyAG Employee Benefits under ‘My documents’. Prepared by Sigedis, this statutory document shows their position on 31 December of the previous year.

The overview is a valuable reference point, but it remains a snapshot. In MyAG Employee Benefits, employees can also consult the latest position of their supplementary pension and track how it evolves over time.

The pension overview shows where your employees stood.

MyAG Employee Benefits shows where they stand today.

MyAG Employee Benefits makes your investment visible

The app also goes beyond pensions. Depending on the covers you provide, employees can find information about their hospitalisation insurance, outpatient care insurance, death benefit cover and income protection insurance. This gives them a broader view of their employee benefits.

Use your toolkit to inform employees

Your toolkit contains ready-to-use posters, email templates and other communication materials to help you promote MyAG Employee Benefits without having to create anything yourself. Simply choose, download and print.

This makes it easier for employees to discover their app and gives your employee benefits the visibility they deserve.

Your pension plan only delivers its full value when employees can see it

Do you invest in your employees’ supplementary pension? The challenge today is to make that pension saving visible and easy to understand. Employers who make pension savings tangible strengthen the perceived value of their reward package and reinforce their commitment to employees. Not only on the day they retire, but throughout their entire career.
