When illness, an accident or pregnancy prevents you from working temporarily, a lot changes. It can be a difficult period in which you worry about your health, your future or your income. You may feel uncertain or overwhelmed.
Take a moment to breathe. And remember: you are not on your own. With the support of your employer and AG, you are protected and guided every step of the way.
What does “occupational incapacity” mean?
You are considered unfit for work if you cannot work temporarily due to illness, an accident or pregnancy. In Belgium, social security provides a benefit, but it only covers part of your salary. That is why your employer may have taken out an income protection insurance with AG, allowing you to receive a monthly disability benefit on top of the statutory one.
If your employer has also included a waiver of premiums, your group insurance continues to build up even if you are absent for a long period and your employer is no longer required to pay premiums. Your supplementary pension savings therefore remain fully protected.
What do you need to do?
Report your incapacity quickly and easily via MyAG Employee Benefits (app or desktop)
- Open the app and select ‘New claim’ > ‘Occupational incapacity’.
- Complete your claim and add your medical documents:
- The medical certificate of AG (to be completed by your doctor)
- Your GP’s sick notes
Missing a document?
No problem: submit your claim now and upload the missing items later via ‘Add missing documents’ under ‘Occupational incapacity’.
Please note: without all required documents, we cannot process your file or start paying your benefit.
Longer absence or returning to work?
- Your incapacity is extended, or you resume work partially? Upload your medical extension certificates via ‘Extend a period of occupational incapacity’ in MyAG Employee Benefits.
- You return to work fully? Notify us of your first working day via ‘Report a return to work’ in MyAG Employee Benefits.
Relapse after returning to work
If you become unfit for work again within 15 days, report it via ‘Extend a period of occupational incapacity’ and add your GP’s sick note. We will simply reopen your file.
If the relapse occurs between 15 and 60 days after your return, send us the AG medical certificate via ‘Extend a period of occupational incapacity’. If it concerns the same condition or accident, no new waiting period applies. For a new condition, the waiting period stated in your policy applies.
After 60 days, you must submit a new claim via ‘Reporting a new occupational incapacity’.
Good to know
- When should you report your incapacity for work? As soon as possible after the start of your incapacity.
- Maternity leave? Wait until after the birth. You have up to 1 year to submit your claim.
- When does AG intervene? Once your waiting period has ended. It begins on your first day of incapacity. For the exact duration, contact your employer.
- When will I receive my disability benefit? As soon as your waiting period has ended and your file has been approved. We pay your monthly benefit on the fourth last working day of the month.
- Is the amount taxed? Yes. A withholding tax of 22.20% is applied by law. Keep in mind that this is a replacement income and will be further settled in your tax return.
Which documents do you need?
- The medical certificate of AG, directly available in MyAG Employee Benefits.
- Your GP’s sick notes.
What happens after your claim?
Once your file is complete, we pay your monthly benefit.
A medical assessment by an advisory doctor may sometimes be required. AG covers the cost and your medical data remain confidential.
How much will you receive?
The amount depends on:
- Your salary and the formula chosen by your employer
- The degree of incapacity
- The cause (illness or accident)
At ≥ 67% incapacity, you receive 100% of the benefit. Between 25% and 67%, the benefit is paid pro rata. Below 25%, there is no payout.
