Back in May 2024, Waldon raised the alarm. At that time, it reported that more than 1 in 5 employees faced a very high risk of burnout. At AG, we aim to stay in touch with the latest developments, so we looked again at the results of the Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT) with Waldon, specialist in wellbeing at work.
And what did we find? An analysis of 4,227 participant responses between 15 July 2023 and 1 March 2025 shows a concerning trend.
45% of employees are now at moderate to high risk of burnout.
Looking more specifically at those at high risk, the figure stands at 24%, i.e. 1 in 4 employees. In less than a year, the situation has significantly worsened, reflecting broader societal trends.
A sobering reality, especially considering that in Belgium, half a million workers have been unable to work for over a year – one third of them due to mental health issues such as burnout and depression (source: INAMI/RIZIV).
Are your employees comfortable in their own skin?
You care about your employees and want to do everything possible to promote their wellbeing. So do we. That’s why we go far beyond just providing insurance.
In this way, all your employees have free access to My Mind by AG, an intuitive service that helps them find a stable mental balance.
This service is available via the MyAG Employee Benefits app, keeping the threshold for use very low. Even better – My Mind is also available to employees’ partners and children.
What exactly does My Mind offer?
- A scientifically validated, anonymous questionnaire developed by KU Leuven to assess resilience.
- Self-care tools to help restore, strengthen and maintain mental wellbeing.
- Personal programmes to improve mindfulness at each employee's own pace.
- Safe2Talk: 24/7 access to professional advisers for mental, legal and financial support.
After completing the resilience questionnaire, employees receive a personal score which they can improve through targeted support available in the app. They’ll gain access to relevant articles and tailored programmes. Our data shows that 75% of participants actively engage with the tools offered!
Let’s take a closer look at where things are going wrong.
The scientifically validated Burnout Assessment Tool measures four key dimensions: energy, emotional regulation, engagement, and concentration & decision-making.
Energy
Severe energy loss results in physical fatigue and weakness, as well as mental exhaustion. Typical symptoms include a lack of energy to take on new tasks, feeling completely drained after a day’s work, becoming tired after minimal effort, and being unable to unwind after hours.
Emotion management
Strong emotional responses and feeling overwhelmed by emotions lead to frustration, irritability, and anger. Employees may overreact, feel upset or sad without understanding why, and struggle to manage their emotions in the workplace.
Engagement
When employees become psychologically disengaged from their work, they show a strong aversion to their tasks. They mentally – and sometimes physically – withdraw, avoiding contact with colleagues and clients. Indifference and cynicism set in, along with a lack of enthusiasm or interest. Employees may feel like they’re functioning on autopilot.
Concentration & decision-making
Memory lapses, difficulty focusing, and poor cognitive performance hinder clear thinking and learning new things. Employees become forgetful and mentally distracted. They struggle to make decisions – often without knowing why.
As shown in the dashboard above, the greatest difficulties reported by employees who completed the assessment relate to managing emotions, closely followed by concentration problems.
What can we do about it?
There are many programmes and techniques that can help support your employees’ mental wellbeing.
To improve emotional regulation, consider offering psychological support combined with mindfulness training. You can also train team managers to spot early warning signs and encourage open conversations about their priorities, workload and possible solutions.
To support concentration and decision-making, provide your employees with helpful strategies, such as chunking (breaking down large tasks into smaller, more manageable ones), the Pomodoro technique (working for 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break) and prioritisation methods. Creating quiet workspaces within the company and sharing sleep hygiene tips can also make a big difference.
These are two areas where employees, given the right support, can easily take steps themselves. An excellent tool for this is My Mind by AG, a free service in their app!
